#SayHerName Day of Action to End State Violence Against Black Women, Girls and Femmes.  Thursday May 19th at 18.00-20.30, Speakers’ Corner, Hyde Park

“I cannot let Sarah’s death be in vain …. I want action, I want change.” – Marilyn Reed

Marilyn Reed, the mother of Sarah Reed will be speaking at the 2nd National #SayHerName Day of Action to End State Violence Against Black Women, Girls and Femmes on Thursday May 19th at 18:00 – 20:30. Speakers’ Corner, Hyde Park, London. The Sarah Reed Justice Campaign (SRJC) is supporting the event organised by a coalition of UK Activists as an act of international solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter, BYP 100 and Project South to coincide with the 2nd national day of action taking place in the US as part of the national #SayHerName campaign, in honour of women, girls and femmes who are no longer with us, and/or those who inspire us in our everyday lives.  It will be a unique Black women centred space for activists to lift up, unite, connect, heal and build with each other. Marilyn Reed and Patricia Lamour from the SRJC, Marcia Rigg, sister of Sean Rigg and the United Friends and Family Campaign and a range of poets and performers will take to the mike. Professor Kimberle Crenshaw, co-founder of the African American Policy Forum as well as Alicia Garza, an activist and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Movement in America have given their support for this UK co-ordinated action and are currently in the country. They will be meeting with the SRJC over the coming week to discuss strategy around building momentum for the campaign.

Sarah Reed, a mother, daughter, sister and former victim of police brutality and mental health sufferer was found dead at Holloway Prison on January 11th 2016.  A candlelit protest was held outside Holloway on February 8th on the evening of Sarah’s burial.  Another protest was held on February 23rd in solidarity with prisoners who want to come forward and disclose, as well as open letters being sent by the SRJC to the Governor of Holloway prison and to the Prison and Probation Ombudsman.  The Sarah Reed Justice Campaign, set up on behalf of the Reed Family by Blaksox the social action movement, has so far won the endorsement and support of the TUC Women’s Congress and TUC Black Workers Congress.  Marilyn and Patricia also spoke before thousands at the Anti-Racist Day Rally at Trafalgar Square on 19th March.  Actions to commemorate Sarah’s birthday and a Justice Trail to hold the authorities to account are planned for the future.
