Women's Resource Centre are delighted to announce we have successfully bid for funds from EHRC to prepare the England CEDAW shadow report and associated activities.
We will be holding 6 events across England early 2018 and this is one covering the Birmingham area. Look out for the rest to come!

CEDAW stands for the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women and is an international treaty adopted by the United Nations in 1979. Unlike domestic UK and European Community legislation on sex discrimination and equal treatment, the Convention is solely concerned with the position of women rather than discrimination faced by both sexes (which would include discrimination and inequalities faced by men). WRC have a whole section dedicated to CEDAW with a toolkit and more information, find it here.

The UK government ratified the Convention in 1986. As part of their obligation state parties have to report to the Committee who examine the measures implemented by the country to comply with its obligations under the Convention. The Committee meets twice a year and countries are examined on a rolling basis, approximately every four years. The UK Government is next due to report  in 2019, you can find the their written report here.

Alongside the Government's written report, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) submit shadow reports and the Committee invites direct NGO input via written reports and informal and formal meetings in order to bring women’s real concerns to national and international attention. This is what WRC are currently working on and these events are a part of the process.

By hosting these events across England, we hope to raise the understanding, awareness and capacity of a wide range of Civil Society Organisations in relation to the international human rights framework and the CEDAW review process. Plus we will facilitate discussion of issues to be raised in the shadow civil society response to CEDAW, including the previous recommendations. Furthermore, we will be providing training on CEDAW, the role of CSO’s and the process for contributing to the joint CSO shadow report.

These events will take place across various regions so that we can gain as much information and outreach as possible and they will be led by our expert authors, whose knowledge of CEDAW and the shadow reporting process is some of the best in the UK.

Please note this event is for women only.
