The first special event of 2017-18 will focus on health and violence against women and girls. This event will emphasise the need of a holistic approach in understanding health and VAWG both within the VAWG sector and across other social issues and sectors. The aim of this event is to facilitate cross-sector conversations on health and violence against women and girls in a safe and collaborative environment by providing a space for thought-provoking, inspiring, and engaging conversations extending well beyond the event.

The event will consist of speeches and workshops presented by speakers and facilitators exhibiting a rich variety of expertise, experience and perspectives. Topics of the day include:

  • Women carers
  • BME women
  • Mental health
  • Austerity
  • Legal Frameworks
  • No Recourse to Public Funds – health impacts
  • Pregnancy and related health risks
  • Cross- sector partnerships

Special Events are quarterly events put on by Women’s Resource Centre as part of the Ascent project. The topics of the events reflect emerging needs of the VAWG sector, including VSO’s, public services, housing and cross-sector needs.

 Who’s it for?

  • Women’s organisations and projects in London
  • Services that address the needs of those at risk of or experiencing VAWG, e.g.:
    • Voluntary and community sector organisations
    • Statutory sector services
    • Officers from different public service teams such as safeguarding, housing, social service
    • Commissioners of VAWG services
  • Partner organisations from related areas of delivery especially those that address women’s health needs, homelessness and housing, no recourse to public funds, refugee and asylum seekers, young people, substance misuse etc

The event aims to:

  • Facilitate conversation, find solutions and share perspectives and visions
  • Identify obstacles and develop long lasting and beneficial collaboration and partnerships
  • Increase participants’ understanding of the need of a holistic perspective on health and VAWG – both when considered separately as well as together
  • Illuminate particular health issues related to;
    • Age
    • Intersectionality and complex needs
    • The BME community
    • The political climate
    • Organisations and Institutions
    • Legal frameworks

Due to limited funding, only lunch (and water throughout the day) will be provided.  Tea and coffee will not be provided as we made the decision to invest in community kitchens with a focus on women’s rights and empowerment rather than providing these additional refreshments. We hope you understand and support us in our choice.

Please note, this event is funded for two participants per organisation. If more than two persons from the same organisation want to attend the event, they will be placed on a waiting list and will be registered for the event depending on availability.

This course is FUNDED  for women’s organisations or projects based in London working with those affected by sexual and domestic violence
